Berea takes its name from the Biblical city of Berea, chosen by early Scots-Irish settlers who formed the Berea Baptist Church on White Horse Road in 1843 in reference to the “noble Bereans” of Acts 17. After the Revolutionary War, farmers were drawn to the rich soils between the Saluda River and Paris Mountain, establishing cotton farms and grist mills along the Reedy River and laying the groundwork for a thriving agricultural community. In 1953, the extension of Greenville’s public water supply sparked rapid residential growth, and Berea evolved into a bedroom community for nearby Greenville—yet officially remains unincorporated under Greenville County’s governance. Today, Berea is a census-designated place with over 15,500 residents in the Greenville–Mauldin–Easley metropolitan area; you can explore local services on the Greenville County government website or learn more on its Wikipedia page.
